YouTube Removes Close Option on Sidebar on Mobile Ads

Comparison of two YouTube ad layouts: the new version (top) keeps the sidebar ad panel fixed, while the old version (bottom) lets you remove it with an “X” and watch your video without mobile ads blocking part of the screen.

YouTube has removed the ability to close the sidebar on certain horizontal video ads when viewed on mobile. These sidebar panels, often used to showcase shoppable products or sitelinks, now remain fixed throughout the ad.

Comparison of two YouTube ad layouts: the new version (top) keeps the sidebar ad panel fixed, while the old version (bottom) lets you remove it with an “X” and watch your video without mobile ads blocking part of the screen.

Previously, users could dismiss the panel to view the ad full-screen. The update forces the sidebar to stay visible, occupying a large portion of the screen and potentially detracting from the main video creative.
