Faulty Image Cropping Detected in Google’s Discover Ads

Hana Kobzová spotted two ads in her Discover feed using square-cropped images that appear to have originally been horizontal.

Since both ads used a similar format, the likely cause is Google’s automatic image optimization in Demand Gen campaigns. This behavior is controlled by the adaptive layouts setting under Asset optimization.

To avoid unexpected cropping, advertisers should check if adaptive layouts are enabled in their campaign settings. Disabling this option can prevent Google from modifying image ratios, helping retain original asset dimensions.

Alternatively, the advertisers may have mistakenly uploaded the image and enable them in all format without without adjusting the crop for each one.
