Ginny Marvin, Google’s Ads Liaison, confirmed on X that ads in AI Overviews (AIO) will only appear in one placement at a time, either above/below the AIO or within the AIO itself, not both.
She also explains: “The exact match or broad match keyword could be eligible to trigger an ad above or below AIO, while only the broad match would be eligible to trigger an ad to show within AIO. Since you have an eligible match to show above/below AIO, that is prioritized.”
This clarification comes as AI Overviews expand to more countries, and Google launches AI Mode in the U.S. Alongside that rollout, Google also began testing ads within AIO and expanding existing ad formats in this space.
A new Google Ads Help document was also published to guide advertisers through this evolving experience.
Ginny also noted:
- Ads within AIO will be relevant to the overview content.
- These ad placements are still experimental and subject to further changes.

As AI becomes more central to Google Search, understanding these placement nuances will be key to optimizing visibility and performance.
