Prerequisites for Synthetic Content in Political Ads

As of July 2024, Google will update its Political Content Policy to require advertisers to disclose election ads containing synthetic or digitally altered content that inauthentically depicts real or realistic-looking people or events.

Advertisers must select a checkbox in the “Altered or synthetic content” section in their campaign settings. For specific formats such as mobile feeds, Shorts, and in-stream ads, Google will generate an in-ad disclosure. For other formats, advertisers must provide their own clear and conspicuous disclosure, with acceptable language, including phrases like “Altered or synthetic content” or “This image does not depict real events.”
